When I was younger, I collected a large number of compact discs. Being an audiophile, I ripped these in lossless formats (initially FLAC, later Apple Lossless format to listen to my music on my iDevices). This solution worked great within the Apple ecosystem. I used Airport Express stations and, later, AirPlay functionality on my AV receivers to stream music from my iTunes collection to my speakers.

Unfortunately, the AirPlay ecosystem has stagnated. Airport Express WiFi units never supported Wireless-AC and now have been discontinued. Meanwhile, Wireless-AC enabled Google Chromecast (video or audio) devices can be purchased for under $25. Few portable speakers support native AirPlay these days, favoring Bluetooth or Google Cast. I am not aware of any soundbars that support AirPlay. While AirPlay is still included in AV receivers, AirPlay is falling behind Google Cast in terms of key features that appeal most to AVR consumers, like device groups (zones). Most importantly, Apple hasn’t yet released an Amazon Echo or Google Home competitor that would provide voice control for playback of audio throughout the home.

So I faced a conundrum: all my lossless music is in iTunes for seamless sync with my iDevices. Just as importantly, the combination of my personal music collection curated over three decades plus Apple’s Genius playlist functionality is a personal “radio station” that no online streaming service can match. But all my home entertainment devices now use Google Cast.
Google would prefer that you upload all of your music from iTunes to Google Play and then stream it back to your mobile device. Undeniably, this is a free, functional solution. But, Google requires you to stream music from the cloud, not locally. And that music is converted to the lossy MP3 format, sounding nowhere near as good as your original CDs. Finally, there is nothing comparable to iTunes’ Genius playlists with Google Play.
Airfoil is a software app by Rogue Amoeba for both Mac and Windows. Initially, it was designed to enable AirPlay streaming from any Mac app to an AirPlay target. Then, they focused on enabling AirPlay receiver functionality in “satellite” iOS, Android, Windows, and Linux devices.
With the v5.5 update last Fall, Airfoil now also supports streaming music to Google Cast enabled devices. This addresses a whole new problem: Airfoil is the only solution that I am aware of (1) to stream directly from iTunes to Google Cast devices and (2) to stream across both AirPlay and Google Cast devices. You can even create device groups including both AirPlay and Cast devices (e.g. Upstairs, Downstairs, Whole Home). However, it does not automatically inherit existing Google Cast groups.
In my experience, Airfoil has worked flawlessly: no audio drop outs or audio sync issues. Audio streamed to Apple devices use Apple Lossless format. Audio streamed to Google Cast devices use PCM (lossless) format.
You can define a number of Genius playlists in iTunes on your iMac and then play them to the desired devices or groups of devices. A simple menu icon permits you to quickly change the target devices on the fly.
Airfoil does a great job of music streaming but the control of what is streamed throughout your home is still a Mac/PC-centric experience today. Users must go back to the room where their Mac is, sign in, and change iTunes accordingly.
Google Home Support
It would be ideal if Airfoil could be exposed as a local media service that could be controlled with Google Home and Google Assistant on mobile devices, TVs, set-tops, and Nvidia Spot devices. First, I would like to play and pause the music streaming. Second, I would like to control the volume of the Google Cast receiver. Finally, I would like to specify playlists, radio stations, Genius mixes, artists, albums, or songs to play from iTunes.
Better Mobile Remote Control Apps
As a fall back to voice control, there needs to be a better solution for remote control of your whole home audio using your iOS or Android phone or tablet. Airfoil has both an iOS and an Android mobile app. Clearly, both were originally intended to serve as Airfoil’s satellite music clients, not primarily to serve as a remote control for Airfoil. The iOS mobile app’s remote control capabilities are limited to play, pause and rewind/fast forward. The Android mobile app doesn’t even have these capabilities. As a result, I must use the iTunes Remote on my iPhone to control the music streaming experience. Ideally, I would also be able to use Android tablets, like those that came with my Vizio displays, to control music streamed from Airfoil.
More Efficient Audio Streaming
My home network is a combination of Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-AC access points. We live in a rural area, so WiFi congestion and interference aren’t an issue. For other users, particularly those using WiFi in urban areas, home network and spectral efficiency is far more important to the user experience. Therefore, I would recommend that Rogue Amoeba use FLAC (a compressed lossless format) to stream audio to Google Cast devices, rather than PCM (which is uncompressed lossless audio). I estimate that this would reduce streamed file size by 30-60% depending on the type of music (rock v. classical). This also would be useful for edge devices that are limited to Wireless-N only.
